Perfect paired with a spicy sausage gravy, or Spicy Honey Butter (recipe below). Ample amount of cheese, ample amount of spice! A slight twist from the traditional biscuit, the dough is chalked full of Cheddar and Pepper Jack with a kick courtesy of the team of ginger and cayenne pepper.

Spicy Cheddar Biscuits


Ingredients

  • 3 ½ C All purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp Baking powder
  • 1 tbsp Sugar
  • 2 tsp Cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp Ginger
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • 1 C Shredded cheddar cheese mix
  • 1 C Shredded pepperjack cheese
  • ⅔ C Vegetable shortening
  • 1¼ C Buttermilk
  • For Topping:
  • 1 C Shredded cheddar cheese mix
  • Paprika shaker
  • For Spicy Honey Butter:
  • 2 Tbsp. Butter, warmed slightly.
  • 1 Tbsp. Honey
  • 1 Tsp. Cinnamon {Add less or more to taste}.
  • ½ Tsp. Cayenne Pepper {Less or more to taste}.


 

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F.
  2. Lightly spray large baking sheet with nonstick spray.
  3. Measure out shortening, pinch into small pieces roughly the size of a marble. Place in 4. refrigerator to chill.
  4. Measure out buttermilk. Set aside in refrigerator to chill.
  5. Measure flour, baking powder, sugar, salt and spices into medium bowl. Sift.
  6. Toss in cheeses.
  7. Add shortening to dry ingredients. Gently rub into dry ingredients via fingertip until mixture resembles a coarse meal.
  8. Slowly pour in chilled buttermilk, fold with spatula. Knead with hands until clumps form. 11. Roll dough out to roughly ¾-inch-thickness.
  9. Using a biscuit cutter or an upside cup, cut out biscuits and place on baking sheet.
  10. Bake 12-15 minutes. With about a minute remaining, remove biscuits, sprinkle cheese mix and finish bake.
  11. Sprinkle paprika or desired spice onto melted cheese when baking is complete.
  12. Biscuits will be a golden brown, tops will slightly crack. Enjoy!
  13. For Spicy Honey Butter: Stir ingredients together, rapidly.
